13 Word/Phrase associations with Indian 2 Wheeler brands

What's in a name (word/phrase)? Well.. quite a lot!

If a brand is associated / know by a particular word or phrase, than that could be the best thing in the world for that brand. Some non-motorcycle examples are:

  • Dettol = Protection
  • BMW Cars = Driver’s/Enthusiasts Car

If a brand is lucky enough to “own a word/phrase”, then all that the brand has to do is to make sure that it makes products which stay true to the image which is reflected in the “word/phrase”.

Posted below is a list of such word/phrases which according to me is associated by Indians to certain 2 wheeler brands. Let me know if you agree/disagree with the list and might have suggestions of your own.

  • Honda: Quality
  • Hero (Erstwhile Hero Honda): Trust
  • Yamaha: Power/Pick Up
  • Bajaj: Value for Money / Maximum Bang for Your Buck
  • Royal Enfield: Old School/Mature
  • Suzuki: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ?
  • TVS: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ?
  • Mahindra 2 Wheelers: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ?

Ever wondered why Yamaha has never been successful in selling a simple "Point A - Point B" commuter motorcycle in India..??

The reason for the failure of Yamaha in commuter segment is not because of the perceptional problem, it's simply because the bikes were not upto the mark and the After-Sales-Services was also pathetic.

Nicely put payeng.

Apart from the words you have associated with them, for me they mean:

Yamaha: Style
Bajaj: raw power
Suzuki: Reliable

Good post Payeng bhai!! slowly but steadily, I believe Bajaj is making sure that power & pick up is also associated with Pulsar along with VFM.

@Veerendra

Pulsar does stand for Power and Pickup.. but the mother brand "Bajaj" I believe more stands for VFM

@Mithun,

I agree the service of Yamaha was bad.. but after launch of the FZ and R15, it has greatly improved.. but still Yamaha's simple commuters find not many takers in India.

@Ashoka,

thanks buddy

Honda: Extremely Overpriced. Taking advantage of brandname.
Yamaha: Powerpacked.
Suzuki: Best value and reliable.

In bangalore, Suzuki Slingshot 125cc 5-gears with disc brake is priced 59k and price includes sareeguard and leg-guard.

Honda Shine 125cc 4-gears with disc brake is 65k, and Honda Twister 110cc cost 62k. Also, accessories cost nearly 1.5 to 2k extra for Honda bikes. Even number plates in Honda cost Rs.200 extra.

Also, Suzuki has been extremely successful in car segment in India via Maruthi Suzuki.

Yamaha has not been able to attract the A-B segment as the brand was always known for power and not mileage...
They need to come out with some out of the box ads. which claim 200 KMPL and see how the brand images changes... being a Yamaha fan I hope they dont do it..

Hmmmm.....nice comments.......liked the one; "Mahindra-Butchers should not become Surgeons". Here comes what I feel:
Honda: expensive & over priced spares
Suzuki: Best among the Japs companies but never gave its 100% to Indian markets.
Yamaha: Rebellious, Trendsetters
Bajaj: Look Mommy, my scooter grew up overnight to "Definitely Male".
But Yes, must thank them for changing the Indian Motorcycle Market comPlety.
TVS: lousy, they better stick to their mopeds & may be Scooties, but not beyond!
Hero Honda: Splendour & Mileage
Royal Enfield: The BIG Daddy of Indian roads
M & M: Where?

KTM: super fast orange shaded wingless naked moto GP COCHROACH. :-D
Kawasaki: De Ja Vu.......Only NINJA won't do!!!
