25 KTM 200 Duke Vs R15 Vs CBR250R. But Why..??

Can a Street Bike, Super Sports and a Sports Tourer.. honestly be compared..??

A casual search over the internet will land you on many virtual/keyboard comparo between the KTM 200 Duke, Yamaha R15 and CBR250R, courtesy auto blogs and sites. Even not actually seen the models in flesh (forget riding them) doesn’t deter these online gurus to give you expert gyan.

Comparing a "Street Bike" (200 Duke) with a "Race Track Focussed Bike" (R15) and a "Sports Touring Bike" (CBR250R) is as useless an exercise as trying to find out which a better student between someone who is "brilliant in science" with one who excells in "sports" and another who is great in "fine arts" (in no particular order).

Blogs have freedom of speech and are free to publish whatever they want. But pick up a couple of this month's reputed "desi" auto publications.. and voila similar comparisons have been published in these reputed publications as well..!!

I trust our auto journalists to know better that comparing these models are like trying to compare the proverbial "chalk and cheese". But one can't really blame them as they are merely playing to the gallery.

Actually even the audience at the gallery aren't to be blamed as these models (200 Duke, R15, CBR250R etc.) are nothing but "Premium Commuters" (a.k.a glorified commuters). Super Sports, Sports Tourers, Steetfighter.. whatever. At the end of the day, they are all used for commuting right..??

Comparo of "Premium/Glorified Commuters" in that case isn't that illogical.

The answer is simple ,if you liked the karizma go buy the cbr.If you likes the good old two strokes buy the ktm & if you want to be desi Rossi buy the r15.

To answer which is much better among the three. I think it really depends on the user and its preference. Nice review though.

Overdrive magzine has done the camparison between these three bikes.i think is fine...because one gets to the know the fine details & strong points of each bike and we can accordingly choose what fits our need.

@softwareprabhu any consumer who is spending more than 120k INR on his/her purchase is bound to compare for the best bang for buck... its what we visit blogs for, which is better in every means, ride, performance, etc... n u should learn more languages i believe... flmao

not just overdrive, BBC Topgear has compared the 200 duke with the Impulse and the R15 version 2.0!!! wtf!!

@anonymous,

there is no need to pick an argument with software prabhu.

Blogs are written by normal guys (like myself).. and most of the time its advised to take whatever is written on them with bucket fulls of salt

Payeng, whats ur point dude? if one compares this trio, is that logical or crap? or do u simply imply ur blog is better than any other auto blog on the www, and that u have more 'expert gyan' than the renowned auto journos, let alone those 'online gurus'

best bang for your buck. you mean a sedan vs http://www.autoblog.gr/2012/03/31/donkey-on-greek-car-site/

the main point of this blog post is to give you an awareness about to choose a best bang for you bucks. try to realize that. its GFY otherwise GFY.

what happen to all of you guys! don't you get the point.

if you put on a full fairings in splender or boxer, and put on some split seat, bla bla ... then it will became R15? Never.

they both are belongs to different category and made for different purpose.

but if you use R15 for everyday commuting (no comments Payeng) then you can compare your glorified commuter with.

I think that the point Payeng is trying to make is that all these bikes are good but in different areas, so comparing them would be meaningless. Hes just trying to let you know that these comparisions should not influence your decision. If you are looking for a good bike to tour with dont just choose the Duke over the CBR 250 only because they make the same power and the Duke is cheaper. The CBR is so much more suited for touring because of the relaxed way you can ride it unlike the Duke where you constantly have to keep shifting because of the short gear ratios. It all depends on what you want the bike for. A pointless comparo shouldnt influence your decision. All these three bikes are good at what they do, buy the one that calls to you.

i know you 'Biker Far Away'. you are always cool and kind. :)

@softwareprabhu in india, every bike is used for commuting except some like imports, somebody having cbr250r doesn't mean that he/she will bring out it only for touring n not to use it for daily commuting... its the sole purpose of a bike here, so bikes are bound to be compared within same price league... by comparison i don't mean the purpose, but the engine performance, quality of parts etc.. so better u gfy...

@softwareprabhu

thankyou for your clarification on the point.
Would appreciate if you help us with its marathi and tamil translations too.

@Payeng, you were right dude, "online gurus" huh! ask for one, you get dozens.

Got your point, comparing these 3 bikes isn't right morally but if there is any enthusiast in the market for buying a fast and quality bike I guess these are the only options regardless of which segment it falls into [barring the imports]. Like me, I am right now looking at bikes after owning pulsar 200 for 4 years and my obvious short lists are KTM 200 and Honda CBR even though I know how different these 2 bikes are. Comparos like this help, despite looking hopeless.

@All above,

This just vindicates my earlier categorization of Indian motorcycles. According to that the R15, CBR250R, KTM 200 Duke fall under "Premium Commuters".

In India the Price comes first.. categorization based on usage is still sometime away in India.

The above is required because there are many new riders who do not have a lean towards any of the riding style (because they haven't ridden any yet) and today's kids can convince their parents to cough up over a lakh of rupees for their college or even school commute.
There is another "indian" angle, some people buy bikes solely based on the price of the bike, it doesn't matter what their riding style is (they don't care to know about it). its just a public symbol to them 'look i chose an alternate mode of transportation.' What ever is the most flashy and provides them with street rossi credit they jump for it.

Poor Payeng! People are so dense one guy says got the point and then he says he still wants to compare them lol

r15 is the sexiest,CBR is the macho-est and Duke is the coolest

can u plz tell me the top speed of r15 n does it vibrate at all at those speeds???

Praveen said...

They are compared because they fall in the price category of 1 lakh - 2 lakh. They are the bikes on your mind when you got 2 lakhs to spend on a bike.
In India i think the biking categories are defined solely by the price they fall into, why else is the Ninja rarely compared to these bikes?
For the blogs and mags, writing about these bikes makes the most marketing sense.
