38 What does Hero Honda’s APDV, ASFS and ATFT mean?

In 2010, Hero Honda has started to brand its bikes under APDV, ASFS and ATFT acronyms..

No "blog/site" has so far noticed it that in 2010 Hero Honda has quite deliberately started to brand its 100 cc models with the APDV, its 125 cc models with ASFS and its 150 cc range with ATFT acronym.

Let’s see after this particular post of mine how many "similar" posts come up and on which blogs and how fast. Kindly ping me if you come across similar posts on other blogs/sites.

APDV

The refreshed 100 cc models of Hero Honda in 2010 Splendor Pro, Passion Pro and the Splendor NXG (barring the budget models CD Dawn and CD Deluxe), all sport the APDV tag somewhere on its body panels.

What is APDV?

I have found out (Hallelujah.. at last!!) APDV stands for "Advanced Pro Series Digital Variable Ignition System". Although I have not found any accompanying literature with it, the term probably means that the ignition of the spark plugs in these motorcycles is controlled digitally. Which should benefit in better and more efficient combustion of fuel.

ASFS

The 125 cc Glamour got the ASFS alphabets on its body panels in its late 2008 upgrade (along with the red colored chassis) and now so does the 2010 Super Splendor.

At the time of its launch in 2005, the Super Splendor was advertised to have a "Quantum Core" engine. The term "Quantum Core" was the subject of many jokes in internet biking forums for it did not make any sense. It looks like Hero Honda has now decided to brand its 125 cc engines under the ASFS tag. Makes sense since the Super Splendor and the Glamour both have exactly the same 125 cc engine built on different body panels.

What is ASFS?

It stands for "Advanced Swirl Flow Induction System", which according to my understanding means that the "air+fuel" mixture creates "Swirl" into the combustion chamber in the engine, which should aid better burning of fuel. It is kind of similar to Bajaj Auto’s DTS-Si (Digital Twin Spark – Swirl Induction) technology.

ATFT

The CBZ Xtreme got the ATFT tag in its late 2008 upgrade and the Hunk in its 2009 "slight" upgrade. Now in 2010 Hero Honda has decided to put the ATFT tag on the Achiever as well.

What is ATFT?

It stands for "Advanced Tumble Flow Induction Technology", which according to my understanding means that the "air+fuel" mixture creates "a tumbling motion" (like "Jill came tumbling down after" from the Jack and Jill nursery rhyme) which again should aid in better burning of fuel.

Why do manufacturer put such abbreviations on their products?

Marketing guys of these companies should make sure that the common man should be able to relate these letters with its products..

Hero Honda is not the first to put Alphabets on its bikes. Bajaj has done it with their DTS-i and DTS-Si engines, TVS has its CVT-i and CCVT-i engines, HMSI (Honda) had Optimax and Ergotec on its Shine, Suzuki had XTP on its Zeus/Heat, Yamaha had YTPS on its bikes. Phew..!!

Why do they do it?

Well, just the other day when I was making up my mind on which car to buy one of my friend told me that if I am looking at buying the Hyundai i10, then I should get the one with the "Kappa" engine and in case I want to got for a Maruti, then I should go for the ones with "K- Series" engines.

I ask my friend what does the Kappa / K-Series engines mean, he was blank but said that it meant something Hi-Fi / something good. I finally ended up buying the Chevrolet Spark and only later I realized that even Chevrolet were branding the engine on the Spark as "S-Tec".. and I didn't know that earlier.

So Moral of the story is that makers can label their bikes with any kind of letters, but its marketing guys should make sure that the common man should be able to relate these letters with its products.

I am sure that you must have heard about Orient P.S.P.O.

What..?? You don’t know what P.S.P.O is..?? "AARE YEH P.S.P.O NAHIN JAANTA..!!"

Smart analysis. Is this different naming culture is only in India or US/Europe also?
And also i dont know why they put so much of variants in the Car models? Vxi, Lxi, Axi, LD, BD.... Kappa, Era, Aura.. I understand these are all having some extra features, but why there are too many variants - just confusing the buyer.

i think manufacturers do it globally like vtech/vcm of honda etc...its to give product some usp..maybe..but as long as those tech terms are implemented its good...or just having terms for style like quantum core makes it look funny

Well, there is one thing I would like to mention....... As far as I know(from somewhere I don't remember), ATFT and ASFS are almost the same technology and that it was introduced by Hero Honda before Bajaj took to it when they were designing the XCD's engine..... It simply means that the fuel, when being pushed into the motor is sent in the form of a vortex thus drawing in more air and thus, resulting in better and more efficient combustion of fuel...... (I think I'd come across this while reading one of the magazines)......

APDV, I think, means that the Ignition timing is controlled by a microprocessor which varies the time according to throttle position, engine speed or other such factors!!!!!!

i would like to mention that atft technology of herohonda is derived from cvcc (compound vortex controlled combustion) technology of honda cars developed in somewat 1960's.........same functioning but with different name....nikhil chhabra

Full form ..which become word is called acronyms

all these types comes in quantum core engines ?

kappa means product architecture. every company follow some platform while developing a product

Its like MUNNA BHAI M.B.B.S, it adds extra qualification, I don't think its senseless as there is lot of difference the technology of yesterday CD100 and todays splendor,
HeroHonda Karizma(223CC)made 17 bhp but pulsar 200 makes 23bhp, why??
Because of all these technological innovations, kuch extra hai toh dikhana bhi chahiye,
