4 TVS Max 4R: First Look & Details

First look at the TVS Max 4R.. probably the first "Utiliy" motorcycle in India

TVS should have retained the body panels of the older 2 stroke TVS Max 100R

This new model looks like a "New" model with the old "Max" name..

Usually an "R" in the name of a bike means that its a sporty, racy bike. Eg: Honda CBR series, Yamaha YZF-R series, Suzuki GSX-R series of bikes, Ninja 250R etc. But this new bike from TVS is far from being a sporty model.

Hindu Business Line has reported the first details of a new motorcycle from TVS Motor, the Max 4R. These motorcycles are being used (tested) for over a month now by a couple of guys in Indore. They have been using it for their business activities, which includes a lot of loading (like vegetables, milk etc.).

Small traders like Milkmen, Vegetable vendors etc. seems to be the target customer for the Max 4R. Most of these small traders would be currently using tiny mopeds or second hand motorcycles for carrying loads.

Uitiliy motorcycles exist in many countries. But surprisingly in India (incidentally the world's second largest 2 wheeler market), till now there has been no specifically made "Utility" motorcycle.

So far guys in small business used to use either the "XL Super" type of small mopeds (also a TVS product) or used to use second hand motorcycles for their loading purposes.

With the Max 4R, TVS has tried to create this so far non-existent "Utility" motorcycle category in India.

TVS trying to revive its "Max" brand:

TVS Max 100R

TVS is trying to piggy back on the brand name of the "Max 100R", a popular 2 stroke model from TVS which was discontinued a couple of years back.

The Max 100R was a popular model especially among small traders and businessmen who used it for carrying loads in their business activities.

Probably taking a leaf out of Bajaj's recent success with the "Discover" brand, TVS has too realized the power of an established brand.

The new Max 4R seems to subscribe to just that school of thought. The "4" in this new bike's name should probably mean that this bike has a 4-stroke engine.

The Max 4R is probably a rebadged Star LX:

Just take a look at the photo of the Max 4R as published in Hindu Businessline (posted above) and compare it with the photo of the motorcycle on the left.

To me both the bikes look exactly the same, except for the different tank and side panel graphics and spoke wheels instead of alloys.

The bike on the left is the Star LX, a 100 cc, 4 stroke motorcycle which is an export model from TVS. The details of the Star LX can be found in the international lineup of TVS motors on its site.

According to me TVS should have retained the body panels of the older 2 stroke TVS Max 100R and plonked in a new 4 stroke engine. In that case it would be easier to for the common man to associate this new "Max" to the genes of the older "Max".

This new model looks like a "New" model with the old "Max" name. Nevertheless TVS has tried to explore a niche among motorcycles in India and one has to appreciate TVS for that.

Update: TVS Max 4R, Details: The Max 4R has been launched and indeed it seems to be a variant of the Star LX with some modifications to its body.
