8 Auto Expo 2008: Summary of the Most Important models for the Bike Makers

Lets look at which are the models that our Bike Makers are putting their money on..

Talk about "Being in the right place at the right time..!!" I am referring to me being there in flesh for the Auto Expo 2008. The New Delhi Auto Expo, which is a biannual event, has virtually become a Pilgrimage of sorts for Auto Enthusiasts of the country. I must say that, it was an experience of a lifetime for me.

Moreover, thanks this exciting new medium called “blog”, I have been able to chronicle my experiences and share it with thousands of bike enthusiasts who visit this blog. I would also like to thank to all those who have chipped in with their comments and has kept the conversation alive.

"The most attractive specimens of the two-legged kind were also strategically positioned on the turntables.."

"Displays that were kept on the turntables can be taken to be the most important models for the bike makers.."

Now that the Auto Expo 2008 is finally over, let us analyze what each bike maker has planned for us. The strategy of each bike maker can roughly be deduced from the kind of display they had put up in the Pavilion.

Let me make it simple for you by saying that, those displays that were kept on (revolving) turntables can be taken to be the most important models for the bike makers, at least for the imediate future . These are the bikes which the Bike Makers do not want you to miss at the Auto Expo. This deduction gets credibility when you observe that the most attractive specimens of the two-legged kind were also strategically positioned on the turntables.

Lets rewind and try to figure out which bikes were kept on the turn tables (and next to... whatever) and then try to make out our own deductions from it..

  • Yamaha: Yamaha had the YZF-R15 and the FZ-150 on two separate turn tables with two knockouts on them.

  • Yamaha @ Auto Expo 2008

Deduction: Yamaha just did not want you to miss the YZF-R15 and the FZ-150 at any cost..!! But with such impressive models (pun intended) how could we ever miss it.

    Its time to deliver now.

  • TVS Motors: Even if the Apache RTR 160 “Fi” was present, TVS made sure that the 125 cc Flame got the most attention at their Pavilion. Two 125 cc "Flame" bikes were kept on the turntable along with female models (what else..!!)

  • TVS @ Auto Expo 2008

Deduction: TVS wants to set the sales charts in Flames.. err.. on Fire. With shrinking profit margins, TVS needs a best seller badly. Will the 125 cc Flame do it for TVS..??

  • Bajaj Auto: Among the two new launches at the AutoExpo, i.e. the 150 cc Discover and the XCD Sprint (with 4 Valves), Bajaj had kept just one bike on a turn table i.e. the XCD Sprint . For a change, there was no one of the fairer sex to obstruct your view (which was perfectly fine with me). However, the absence of anything higher than 220 cc (from Bajaj Auto), was a disappointment.

  • Bajaj @ Auto Expo 2008

By the way, there were bikes from Kawasaki and KTM as well.

Deduction: Following the success of the XCD, Bajaj wants to going in for the Kill with the four valves of the XCD Sprint.

Does the Discover 150 DTSi give away a subtle hint.. (Psst.. what about a New Range of Pulsar UG IV’s with 4 Valves..??).

Also the Ninja 250R should keep the Probiking Flag Fluttering above the Yamaha YZF-R15.

  • Honda / Suzuki / Hero Honda: No comments. Read this instead.

So which is the bike that you are looking forward the most in 2008..??

Hey! Long time reader...first time commenter...Most definitely The 250R mean green...2-2.5L seems worth the bike. I think the Yam R15 also seems tempting but I'm not sure that the build quality (the side panels) will match Kawasaki's for obvious (price) reasons! But dude thnx for all the info here on this blog!

The Kawasaki & the Yamaha definitely are the big ones for this year.

Personally, I'm waiting for the XCD 125 Sprint. It looks a total hooligan bike. Wish Bajaj had added a monoshock, the package would have been even more appealing.

Epiphany,

thanks for finally leaving a comment..

The Ninja will of course be a Ninja..

@Road-Yo,

Even my Pulsar 220 doesn't have a monoshock bro.. expecting it to appear on the XCD before the Pulsars will be too much. Don't you think so..??

Hey Payeng,

You have done Fantastic Job on Auto Expo 2008. I used to check every couple days for any new update and you didn't disappoint me buddy!!! its nice to see all those bikes coming to India like of Ninja, YZF-R15, FZ-150....I liked both Ninja and R15....Wish R15 was around 200cc even if 20cc less than P220cc with same price tag of P220 then I would have bought R15 over P220 (I hope to buy in couples weeks if everything goes according to my plan)....but anyways P220 is very good bike compared to other bikes available in India presently. All Cheers!!! TC!!!

Hey Payeng,
i have been reading you blog since long and i appreciate that you keep up really good work.
Yaar I wish if you could help me a bit regarding my new bike. These days m ownong a H-H splendor(2000 model) and just love my 1st bike i have done few expeditions on my bike in and around city scanning around 450kms. Well this is too much for a 97cc bike with a meagar 7.3 Bhp. well i do more than one could expect from such a small yet splendid machine andi love to worship this piece of Engg. Well i know its so much so yo praise this jurrasic bike but then this is what i feel. Sorry for being soo long but since you are a biker you can understand what i feel. The point i want to make here is that I'm really into what can we say a "Petrol Head".
Well for now, I have saved some money so much so as to buy a PULSAR 220 Dtsi-fi (Around 90K INR) but then since i was not one of the fortunate ones to visit the Delhi Auto Expo-08 and you have had been so i wish if you could help me with some issues.
As of for now i have been evening on the Yamaha YZF R-15 since its launch and tried to mug ever nut and bolt of hers through every nook & corner of the websites to quench my thirst for the best bike my hard saved money can buy since i wont get such an opportunity for atleast another decade or so. So dear if could just ponder on few things as below plz..
1> since I'm of the kind that i would like to go on long expeditions >= 400km i m a bit confused between a road fighter(OR a Cafe racer for a few ppl) Pulsar220 and the Performance racer R15. Though R15 have decent ground clearance of 160mm. So will it make me fall for the Pulsar 220.
2> since you have had an opportunity to see the beauty (R15) in full flesh, So is it worth waiting for R15. Moreover only a handfull of pics are available on the net and from then i could just not get the fact that do those slim(100-80-17)rear and (80-90-17)front tyres do justice to the design.
3>One more issue on the design. Does that full faring is really fabulous I mean if some one has a pic of R-125 one can see how beautifully sculpted it is on the other hand R-15's fairing looks like just fitting every possible size of triangles here and there, so its you who can really comment.
So last but not the least I would be more than just gland! if you could help me choosing my second sole(My New Bike!) So should i Wait for R15 OR pick up the Pulsar 220.
Plz comment since this is my first ever comment on a site and if not then this would break a bikers heart.
regards Pratik

Hi Simple,

Your comment definitely is one of the longest on this blog so far..

Anyway here is my answer to your question..

I have just seen the YZF-R15 during the Auto Expo.. The Bike definietly looks good thanks to its R1 inspired full fairing and twin headlamps.

But according to me the rear of the R15 isn't as appealing as the front. That includes the rear tyre which is as wide as the Pulsar 150's tyre.

The international Yamaha R125 has definitely much more modern styling.. and the R15 haqs different body panels compared to the R15..

Its difficult to comment on how the R15 would perform on Road.. though Yamaha Officials have gone on record to state that the R15 would be the fastest bike in India with excellent handling..

My advice to you is that if you can wait for a few more months, then it would be better to check out how the R15 when it comes out on road and then decide if it satisfies your needs (You will surely read its test ride/Review on "The Bike Cronicles of India")..

Meanwhile do take test rides of the Pulsar 220.
