25 Auto Expo 2008 Coverage: Yamaha YZF-R15 based on the Vixion from Indonesia. [Wallpaper]

Meet the Indonesian Yamaha Vixion, the model on which the Yamaha YZF-R15 is probably based..

  • 22 June, 2007: Economic Times carries the news that Yamaha India has plans of a 4 Valve, around 14 bhp, 150 cc with looks similar to the R1.

  • 23 June, 2007: The Bike Chronicles of India posts that the proposed 150 cc from Yamaha India MIGHT be the 4 Valve, Liquid Cooled, 150 cc.. Yamaha Vixion from Indonesia

  • 28 June, 2007: The Bike Chronicles of India posts a few pics of the Yamaha Vixion of Indonesia.

  • 10 January, 2008: Yamaha India shows the YZF-R15 for India @ AutoExpo 2008.

  • Look closely at the pics of the Indonesian Vixion posted below and it will be clear that the YZF-R15 is based on the Vixion from Indonesia.

    Yamaha Vixion

The R1 like full front fairing and the clip on handle bars have done wonders to the looks of the R15 giving it a mini R1 like look. The Delta Frame has been finished in black for the Indian R-15, also the design of the Exhaust can of the R15 is new. Observe carefully and you will notice that the Kick starter has also been done away on the R-15.

    Yamaha Vixion Rear

    Yamaha YZF-R15 Rear

    Yamaha YZF-R15

It is obvious from the above pics that the rear portion of the two bikes look very much similar. Accrding to me, a slight change in the rear, especially the tail lights should have been incorporated in the R-15.

    About the Engine:

Economic Times had reported (in 22 June 2007) that the 150 cc from Yamaha was planned to have around 14 bhp.. and right now there is a buzz around that the bhp figures of the R-15 might be around 20-22 bhp..!!

Tech Specs of the 150 cc Yamaha Vixion: Source- Yamaha Motor Indonesia

    • 149.7 C.C, 4 Stroke

    • Liquid Cooled

    • Single Cylinder

    • 4 Valves

    • Power: 11.10 kw (14.88 HP or 15.09 PS) / 8,500 rpm

    • Torque: 13.10 nm (1.34 Kgf.m)/ 7,500 rpm

    • Compression Ratio: 10.4 : 1

The usual practice for India bound engines is to detune them from their international specs. This is done to boost the fuel efficiency and also to cope with the relatively poor quality of fuel sold in India.

Since it looks like Yamaha India guys are not looking at fuel efficiency, the question remains how much more (bhp) can the R-15 produce than the Vixion engine.

hey look even if this bike can produce 16 horses it is going to be most powerful 150.it has killer looks and in comparison with top dogs like karizma,p200 or p220 this bike has more to offer.anyone who is looking for 150cc this bike is for you.if this bike comes in the market before rtrfi,i will surely buy it.

    I agree..

The R15 is also rumoured to be light at around 120 kgs.. So 16 odd horses and a 120 kg package would still make it a fast bike for the Indian market.

But expectations from this bike has reached sky high at around 20-22 bhp..

Biking Internet forums are buzzing with excitement that the R15 will make around 20-22 bhp..

So anything less might dissappoint these enthusiasts.

hey payeng please will you ask ur boss or anyone who has a rtr about it.thanks for ur help.

    Hi Ashes,

my boss is quite happy with his RTR..

He likes the sharp handling and the Pick-up/Performance of his RTR.

But he is not quite happy with the vibrations on his bike

He hasn't checked the fuel efficiency yet.. but thinks that he might be getting something around 45 Kmpl.

He is now looking for the Ninja 250R to be launched in India.. He says that the Ninja 250R would be his next bike..!!

I love the looks on this bike, hopefully its not expensive as the TATA nano and as affordable as the R1 ;)

The Vixion weighs 114 kg, there is no way the fairings be heavier than 6 kg, right?

    nilu said...

at 120 kgs, the bike might have a very good power to weight ratio, but dont you think at high speeds the minimal weight might create stability issues?

    Payeng said...

There is too much speculation going around..

Lets reserve our opinions till the Final Official Specs are out.

But one has to applaud Yamaha India for trying to do something new ("Delta Frame", Liquid cooling, Full Fairing.. etc)..

this effort of Yamaha India will surely push the envelope of the Biking Scene in India. Things should only get better after this.

If it makes 20+ bhp there are 2 things that come to my mind:

    1. It will have a redline that is above average i.e. 10,000+ rpm.

    2. The engine will have a higher comp ratio i.e. 9.5:1 or above.

I notice that the bike does not have kick start. The right side casing has the kick lever hole pluged with a rubber insert.

As far as the engine being based on Vixon, that may not be entirely correct. Yamaha has been following the practice of using parts from current bikes for new bikes.

For example the FZR 400 shared engine components with FZR 600 when it was first introduce. However, that does not mean that FZR 600 engine was based on the one from FZR 400. This practice actually allows Yamaha to keep development cost down and keep cost of the bike lower.

    @ansbro,

Hi you guys, Im from Indonesia where V-ixion is out for quite some time.

If this bike is indeed base on the same chassis and engine as V-ixion I got to tell you that you guys are lucky. I tried V-ixion before and in terms of acceleration, my Pulsar 180 with racing CDI, Coil and Spark Plugs still has trouble matching a standard V-ixion.

However the bike is very small compared to Pulsar and its kind of short so long rides may not be pleasant. Also the speedometer is not accurate 130km/h in V-ixion does not equal with 130km/h in Pulsar. Torque wise, Pulsar is the king and Pulsar is much more stable than V-ixion. Top Speed, I have not tested this before but my guess is that Pulsar is better.

Just want to add that before buying Pulsar, V-ixion is my first choice, I chose Pulsar as V-ixion has a 6 months waiting list and is more expensive than Pulsar 180. If V-ixion in Indonesia has front fairing like in India, I would wait patiently for 6 months to have my hands on it.... but maybe not since I am kinda big... it would look like elephant riding on it :P

Lastly is there an inkling of hope Pulsar 180 is coming out with a "racing kit" like TVS? Thanks.

    Hi Hendy,

its nice to hear from a Biker Bro from Indonesia..

We'll have to wait for sometime before we can know about the Final "Official" tech specs of the R15..

So far, I have not heard of any such thing as a "Racing Kit" for the Pulsar 180. But the Pulsar 200 DTSi is on sale in Indonesia.. You can try it.. the Pulsar 200 feels bigger and powerful than the Pulsar 180.

If you would like then you can mail me Pics/Photos of you and your Motorcycles..

    Hi Payeng,

I have been reading your website for quite some time and it has been a major reason why i actually bought a Pulsar 180.

As for my Pulsar, I did not modify the appearance of it. My friend is heavily modifying one after KTM Duke. When it is done i will sure send it to you. As for mine, the only thing that is different from standard Pulsar is probably some gold color in the shocks and a custom silencer. I will send it to you if you are interested.

As for more modification on Pulsar 180 in indonesia do visit the kafemotor or the forum the i am currently on - http://www.kaskus.us/showthread.php?t=476276&page=163

The forum I am in is just a discussion group and not a full fledge club but there may be some interesting pictures that we post there.

For 200 i decided not to upgrade to it since i just bought mine 5 months ago. As for the power difference I manage to offset it with racing cdi and coil. I don't think 200 is any better than it :). The difference in gear and fairing doesn't realy justify the extra cost of upgrading it. Pulsar 220 well that is another thing since it is fuel injected and based on your review, it is one hell of a ride. So perhaps i will wait till 220.

Anyway do keep on writing, I should say quite a lot of early Pulsar owner have at least visited your website once so keep on the good job.

Sorry for posting another one right after the previous one. I forgot to mention regarding V-ixion, you have to use better fuel because of two reason:

    1) It is fuel injection so that means less maintainance but you need to feed it with high quality fuel so as low quality fuel can and will make you destroy your engine.
    2) As you might note, V-ixion uses alot of Spark components and the engine is also part of it. The only difference is in the cc which is 15 cc bigger. However it also maintain the high compression rate which is good if you have the money to feed it high octane fuel and bad if you want an economical bike.

Aside from that pray that they make a better electrical system since they don't have a kick start. Even if there is a kick start, R15 will be troublesome since in Indonesia using kick start when the battery is dead on V-ixion means that the motorcycle will only run for a few kilometer. Also you need to be extra careful if adding additional horns, light as since it is fuel injection, the electrical system is extremely delicate.....

Hi payeng, im anto from Indonesia
Lucky you and your country man, R15 is given the six speed trans..Not like Vixion..
Also, Vixion horsepower in here is only 14 hp, so with R15, i guess not more than 16 hp...And i think 16hp is enough to cope with Suzie Raider 150

hi this is the anurag (nooby biker) whom u gave advise some time before thru email. hope u remember.

i have decide to go for RTR FI.because for me as a noob to go for a 20-22 bhp bike as his first bike would be madness and i would endup crashing somewhere for sure.

i read about your boss being happy with his RTR. and him planning for ninja 250r when it comes here.

i think i can adopt a same stratergy to become a pro biker.

it sounds a more step by step approach. what are your thoughts?

i would like others to comment also.on what should i do!

    Hi Anurag,
