87 Auto Expo 2008 Coverage: TVS Apache RTR 160 "Fi" & Of the Shelf Performance Kit for the RTR 160..!! [Wallpapers]

TVS shows its Fuel injected Apache RTR 160 Fi and an Apache RTR variant with Performance Enhancing Race Kit..!!

No TVS did not show the rumoured 180 cc/200 cc Apache RTR (never believed in rumours in the first place) at the Auto Expo.

TVS Apache RTR 160 "Fi":

But TVS did show the Fuel Injected Apache RTR 160 "Fi".. there were two Apache RTR "Fi"'s kept in the TVS Pavilion.

One was a Red and the other a Yellow Color. My first impression on the first day was that there were two variants of the Fuel Injected RTR that was being launched. But on the second visit to the Auto Expo, a TVS guy standing there told me that only one variant similar to the Red one will finally be produced (the Yellow RTR Fi did not have tank scoops/extensions and rear disc brakes).

TVS Apache RTR 160 Fi

The Red Apache RTR 160 Fi had tank extensions and a rear disc brake to differentiate itself from the carburetted Apache RTR variant. The pattern of the stripe running down the bike is also slightly different from the non-Fi variant.

Expect the RTR "Fi" to come into TVS dealerships very soon. When inquired about the price of the RTR-"Fi", I was pleasantly surprised to hear that it will be just Rs. 5000 over the non-Fi variant. I don't know whether to believe that or not because apart from the Fuel Injection there is also a rear disc brake in the package.

The Fuel Injection hasn't really bumped up the power output of the Apache RTR, but I hope that it should bring down the disturbing vibrations which plauge the Apache RTR 160. The Tech specs of the TVS Apache RTR 160 Fi is posted below..

TVS Apache RTR 160 Fi Tech Specs

TVA Apache RTR 160 with "Race Performace Kit"..!!

Now if you already own the Apache RTR, this is definitely going to put a BIG smile on your face.

TVS will soon make available Performance Enhancing Kits which can be bought off the shelf from TVS dealers and fit on your existing Apahce RTR 160 bike.

TVS Apache RTR 160 With Performace Kit

TVS Apache RTR 160 with Race Performance Kit

The "Race Performce Kit" as TVS likes to call it consists of a Free Flow Exhaust (shown here as Chrome tipped), and some changes in the valves, spark plugs (shown with yellow spark plug cover to differentiate) and the cylinder (according to the TVS guy present there). The modifications will result in an bhp increse from around 15 something to 18.5 BHP..!!

Update: (14'th Jan 08, 21:00 hrs) Just now I got the news from my Boss (he owns/rides an Apache RTR 160..!!) who has just returned from the Auto Expo 08 that the RACE PERFORMANCE KIT IS NOT STEET LEGAL..!!

According to my Boss, the TVS guy at the Expo told him that the Kit can be bought from the Showrooms and used at your own risk on the street. It seems the kit is mainly meant for races.

SIGH..!!

TVS Apache RTR 160 Performace Kit Version Tech Specs

The premium for the Race Perfornmance Kit as told to me should be around Rs. 8,000 (I forgot to ask whether labor charges are included in it too).

If you have an Apache RTR 160 and ready to spend around Rs. 8K more on it, then you can probably ask some intresting questions to the Karizma and the Pulsar 200 and 220. But in the process you might also bring down he resale value of your Apache RTR..

So what do you say..??

[P.S: There was no news about any Race Performance Kit for the Fuel Injected RTR "Fi"]

Now RTR with Performance KIT
whts the difference in Torque Figure?
WRT Standard RTR

Unknown said...

eh
i want the pics with models

Payeng said...

Std RTR has Peak Torque of 13.1 Nm @ 6000 RPM

RTR with Race Kit has Peak Torque of 15.5 Nm @ 7000 RPM

With Torque peaking at a higher RPM in the Race Kit Version, the Fun will continue on the Race Kit Version for a 1000 RPM more over the std Apache RTR..

Sweet..!!

For Pics of Models of the Two Legged Kind.. If you want it then maybe a post could be decicated on them.. But only after we have covered the two wheeled kind first.

Fair Enough..??

Super coverage man!!!

Love going thro ur blog.
Thumps up 2 u n ur blog!

Hi Payeng..
This is Vijay. I really appreciate ur knowledge in bikes, so i guess u can surely guide me out of this..
well, i'm planning to buy a 150cc bike. what i expect is a durable, stylish & performence oriented bike...i have in my options Apache RTR160 & Honda Unicorn. i wont go for bajaj since i'm fed-up seeing Pulsars everywhere around for many years.. also now i here that Suzuki is soon launching its 150cc bike.. this is making my decision more tougher. so please guide me to make a fair decision.
also if u happen to get any information about Suzuki's new launch in this Auto Expo it would be of great help... thankz...

Payeng said...

Hi Vijay,

I can't comment about Suzuki's 150 cc.. for there is no concrete news about its existence

Since the Pulsar is out from your list and you have shortlisted the Unicorn and the Apache RTR.. I would choose the RTR over the Unicorn.

The Unicorn is more refined, fuel efficient and comfortable but the Apache RTR is more stylish, sporty, powerful..

but the RTR also has vibrations and fuel efficiency will be less than the Unicorn.

Arun Castelino said...

Hey payeng,
have been impressed by the TVS products.. i currenlty own a classic suzuki feiro and wanna go for an apache RTR 160. you think its worth the wait for the RTR EFI? or rather go for the present one if its not much of a difference? please let me know.. cant wait for the new apache

Arun Castelino said...

and also wanted to know wat kind of vibration problem does the current RTR have.. is it a real problem tat has to rectified? does the affect the bike ?

Payeng said...

Hi Arun,

The Classic TVS-Suzuki fiero had a Butter Smooth Engine and Gearbox.

If you are looking for the same smoothness from the RTR engine then you will be disappointed.

The RTR has the punch but the engine doesn't feel as smooth as the older Classic Fiero or the Other 150 bikes in the market today.

I think it makes sense to wait for the RTR - "Fi"

Anonymous said...

Hi Payeng..! Some great news here... I just wanted to know if these kits would fit on classic apache 150 too?

Payeng said...

Can't tell for sure about that (fitting Performance Kit on the Apache 150) bro..

You'll have to check that out with your TVS dealer.

Arun Castelino said...

hey man.. tanx for the reply.. ne idea wens the efi's gonna be available at the dealers?

Payeng said...

"Very Soon" that was what I was told at the Auto Expo 08.

Arun Castelino said...

i was told by a showroom that the rtr's gonna be in blore sometime in april/may... tvs, hosur sources say must be out by the end of this month.. latest by next month....

Hi Payeng,
I am a very new biker.......not very confortable with bikes since i own an activa
I really like RTR...thanx to ur reviews
I am basically looking for a bike which gives me better mileage and good looks....also it shud suit my 5.6 frame..
I liked the new RTR FI except the fairing wich gives the Hunk-like look
Do u feel i shud wait for the new RTR...kindly help

Payeng said...

Hi Sunny,

for your height (5 ft 6) the RTR would be a perfect fit.. I rate the RTR the best among the current 150-160 cc bikes.. for its power and handling.. and racy riding stance..

But Fuel efficiency of the RTR 160 will be lower than that compared to the other 150 cc bikes..

With the "Fi" the RTR should only improve.. Wait for the RTR "Fi" is what I would suggest.

Anonymous said...

hey im 6 feet which bike i sould go for im plannin 2 buy FI when will it realese and what will be the price of the top end model ?

Anonymous said...

Payeng,
1 more thing....i rode the RTR yest....n i wasnt confortable with the gearbox....i feel its a bit clanky...as in shifting from 1st to 2nd, i always landed on neutral....i read about this on tvsapache website also, many people r having this problem....do u think dis is a major problem or with experience i wud b more comfortable?
Thanks.

Payeng said...

@Sunny,

Even even I have found that the Gearbox of the RTR is a little bit hard.. but I had never experienced any false neutrals between gears.

Like the engine, Gears also usually become smoother when it beds in after running in a few thousand kilometers.

6 Ft guys would be more comfortable on a CBZ Xtreme, Pulsar 200/220, Karizma or on a Royal Enfield bike.

Anonymous said...

Hi,
I have heard the RTR gives mileage of between 40-45....Now with FI, by how much would the mileage increase?i know its a question m asking too early, but i would like to hear ur guess....

Anonymous said...

when will the rtr fi and performance kit launch ...
i cant wait till now .. my budjet is 75000 on road ..what should i do i have time till march

Anonymous said...

Hi All,

The perfomance kit is looking exiting .. but what about the people whoare owning apache 150. Can we fit the perfomance kit with the apache 150.
Please comment on this ...

Waiting eagerly ....

hi all,

I need some assistance regarding the tyres of my new pul80..
the tyres are not the usual zapper of mrf rather eurogrip tyres which bajaj is giving with discover135..

does eurogrip bajaj's official tyre for pulsars? will this eurogrip tyre cause any ill effects on bikes grip?

looking forward to your comments..

Payeng said...

The launch date of the "Performance Kit" is not yet final.. all we can do is wait patiently.

I am also not sure if the Apache 150 or the RTR "Fi" can be fitted with the same "Performance Kit" or not.

Let me see if I can try to find out about it.

@ Cool Guy

You have posted your question in the wrong post.

Anyway he is my answer..

I have also noticed that new batches of the Pular 150 comes with a new set of tyres similar to that of the Discover 135 (same size & profile).. I don't think that should make any difference in the handling of the bike..

But be sure to replace yout tyres when they are worn out (3 years or 30,000 Kms is a good time to replace your motorcycle tyres)

@ Sunny,

45-50 kmpl would be a proper estimate for the RTR 160.. My boss who has an RTR 160 got 48 Kmpl when he checked it.. With the RTR "Fi" the increase should be anything between 5 to 10 kms more (but that would be a guesswork).

Arun Castelino said...

i think the waits ON for the apache efi on road... all i know its already under production and should be out in a months time or so.. but no such concrete source.. just got this from a third party who found out from the tvs factory

Anonymous said...

Hii all
Yep the countdown has well began ... the eFI may start my middle of Feb at the earliest or may my Feb end. So Happy Waitin :)

Anonymous said...

Hi Payeng,

I was abt to buy d RTR 160 by nxt week but frm ur comments abt d RTR FI i think its better to wait. I also wanted to ask whether the FI is going to have the same vibration issue that the current RTR has?

Payeng said...

I think its would be wise to wait for the RTR.. hope TVS launches it soon.

The Fuel Injection should make the RTR 160 a better bike.. and hopefully smoother too

Nice 2 c ur blog Payeng
Its very good.
Now I am also waiting for Apache RTR 160 EFi .
I have some questions :
1.When is it officially going to be launched ?
2.Will the carburated version will continue on sale after its launch ?
3.Other than fuel efficiency , looks and engine smoothness what is the difference between both ?
4.The Orange colour of this bikes will be on sale ?
5.I have a height 5'10 should i go for it ?
6.What options I have other than Pulsar in the same budget, the bike should have digital milometer and led tail lights ?

Payeng said...

1. I am not sure about the Official Launch Date, but there are indications that it might be soon

2. TVS has not indicated in any form that the Carburetted variant will go out of production.

3. There will be an increase in price. Have to wait till it is made official.

4. Yes, according to the Expo guys, the Orange color will be exclusive on the Efi Variant

5. For a 5ft 10 guy, the RTR might feel a bit cramped.. but a lot depends on the tpye of build also.. Better check it out yourself

6. For the same budget, LED tail lamps are available on the CBZ Xtreme but Only the TVS Apache RTR and the Bajaj Pulsar has the Digital Speedometer.

i am 185cm guy..which bike wuld suit me and make me comfortable..i have two options..unicorn and apache rtr..i want a better mileage comfort and reliable vehicle..suggest me..

Payeng said...

Hi Shunmuga,

If you are 185 Cms in height, I think the Unicorn would be better for you..

The Unicorn would satisfy your requirements stated by you as well.

Hi Payeng,
Yesterday I read the review of RTR EFI on "Bike",an Indian magazine..
The review as expected was positive...Here are some things I remember of it...Mileage was 52(city) and 64(highway) and overall 54....Price around 70K(Pune)....There was no fairing as we had been in he auto expo pics...TVS has provided rear disc brake option(need to shell out extra)...Now on the speedo, u can now check out the max speed u hav touched on ur RTR...that impressive....On the negative side, vibrations are still there.....overall a nice review....guys check it out..but still no news on its arrival

Anonymous said...

Hi,
I am 6ft guy, which bike is suitable for me? My coice is Apache RTR16O,Pulsar 150,180

Payeng said...

The Pulsar 200 should be more comfortable for 6 ft guys..

Other options are: Pulsar 220, Karizma and the Royal Enfield Bikes.

Hi all ...
I had called TVS Hosur Factory last month and was informed that RTR eFI would roll out by Feb end, But today when i called the Mysore factory ( this is where the RTR is built), i was told that the launch date has been postponed to 1st week of March. This is sad guys ... to make everyone wait.

Anonymous said...

Sorry there is correction ....... the launch is postponed to 1st week of April.

Arun Castelino said...

are you sure the launch is postponed? been waiting since nov for this one... u think its still worth the wait for another 2 months? u'll never really know if its postponed

Anonymous said...

Hi Payeng;
I appreciate your knowledge of bike, you are fabulous . I had a query ,I bought red Apache rtr a week ago , and quite happy with its looks , but can I improve its look a bit more? like any extensions on its body .
Also can I fit tank extensions of fi to my bike ?

Payeng said...

Since the shape of the Tank of the RTR and the RTR EFi is same..

the Tank Extensions of the EFi should be possible to fit on the RTR with some modifications..

Personally, I am not a great fan of bike modifications and hence my knowledge about the same is quite limited.

Unknown said...

Hey Payeng!

I have a red RTR and I might go for a p200, ZMA or RTR EFi. What do u suggest as I am looking for less maintenance bike. I very happy with the RTR but want a bit more power but mileage around 35 to 40. Hey one more ur helment is super sexy. Could you please let me where can I get one for me,

Payeng said...

You can get the helmet (Brand- Daijya) that I use from www.PlanetDSG.Com

They also have a few retail outlets.. check their website for details..

Also e-mail me your bike related queries.. Please do not leave Bike Related Queries as Comments. I will answer them only via e-mail

Anonymous said...

Hi,
TVS now postponed the date of launching "Apache RTR160 Efi"... According to them it wil be launched on 1st or 2nd Week of April 2008...
Disadv-- Vibrations r still there after @60km/hr.No improvements.

Anonymous said...

I hope the performance kit can be fitted onto the A150 too....

Anonymous said...

Hi Payeng,

I am relatively new to biking. And i'm a fan of apache rtr. I have come 2 know that the efi version has greaer average, beter pick up. So, which bike should i go for (within a price range of around 70 K) 1) RTR 2) RTR eFI 3) p200 4) ny other u can suggest. My height is 5' 09" (176 cm)

Does RTR (eFI) has any advantage over P200? Well i feel pulsars are a hell lot common.

I am hearing rumors that eFI has been launched in Mumbai? I hope it won't launch in other cities more late than 1st week of Apri.

Thanks,
Devashish

Anonymous said...

Hi Folks,
I spoke to TVS Mysore again .... was informed that eFI will be launched by 2nd week of April( desperately hope this is true). Also added that the eFI will come with minor modification and testing are going on. When asked why the delay ... They said its bcoz most of the teams 4m Engineering were involved with FLAME.

Anonymous said...

hi payeng.. i have literally gone thru every post...
i didnt knew bout RTR EFI version... this was an added knowledge....i am planning to buy RTR within couple of dayz.... but now it seems the EFI having some add on's....
TVS ppl have been postpoing its availabity in market... dont knw y.?
but is it worth waiting for EFI version..?? cause if the delay is pushed back.. from tentative 2nd week april...
so m really confused... need a responce... ASAP... m on verge to buy that MACHINE...

Anonymous said...

Hi folks,
TVS has relaunched Apache RTR with few minor modifications. Available in Hyderabad as of now. Does this mean eFI will get delayed yet again or will it be launched as informed by TVS in mid April ?? Sad if it gets postponed again.

sudhi said...

Hi Peyang,

I hope you remember me, this is Sudhi, both of us worked for FORD in Chennai.
i have a genuine doubt here..
am planning to buy RTR (the present version) because it gives decent mileage too.
do you think that i have to wait for the new version. (if it gives atleast 40 KMPL as mileage, i can manage).
and my height is 5'9".
What is the best bike for my height. (apache RTR or the Pulsar).
I like riding bikes, performing stunts on it.
Please suggest me a good bike.

Thanks,
Sudhi

Payeng said...

Hi Sudhi,

Of course I remember you.. The Apache RTR is a Sweet Bike..

there is a new Fuel Injected RTR which should be launched soon.. If you think you can wait for it then I would advise you to wait for sometime..

Take the test ride of the Bike.. I think it should fit you.

Hello Payeng,

Thanks for all the posts and replys. I am planning to buy the TVS Apache RTR 160 EFI. I spoke to the service manager in Tristar (Bangalore) about the Gear Box and the vibration problems which many owners have complained about. He says it has all been taken care in the new EFI model. What is your opinion? Are there any APACHE RTR 160 FI owners here in the blog? Please update your experiences.

Thanks,

Hey Peyang,
Gr88 to see all ur comments on Apache RTR.
I actually own Apache RTR. But at times I feel streched while riding and the handle seems to be quite long for my short height. Is there any way to increase the height of the handle.
I did some r&d locally and found that the shockabsorber can be extended and then the handle can follow it. You might have noticed that its handle has screws connected to shocks. Is this a better way, can there be any other way to increase its height...

@AjitCool

TVS has not yet made any (RTR 160 or 180) Racing Kit available to the public for sale.

By the way even if might be available some day, fitting one would make the warranty of the bike void plus actually fitting such kits also make the road road illegal
