8 “Brand Valuation” of the Hero Honda Karizma

Voice you opinion on the Hero Honda Karizma.. and help an MBA Student in her project

I received an interesting e-mail today. It was from an MBA student (Priyanka Mehra) who is doing a project on “Brand Valuation” of the Hero Honda Karizma. In the mail I received a questionnaire to which I had to reply. Answers to these questions basically reflect the consumer's views/opinions towards the Hero Honda Karizma Brand.

Hero Honda Karizma R

"If the Hero Honda Karizma were a person what kind of a person would he be?"

I thought it would be interesting to share these questions with you guys.

This was the e-mail that I had received..

Hey Satadal,

I am a second year MBA student. I came across your blogs on Indian bikes. I am doing a project on Brand Valuation for Hero Honda Karizma. I wanted some opinions about the bike and the brand in general. I’d really appreciate it if I could get your responses on the following questions..

  • 1. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear/see Hero Honda Karizma? (Functionally speaking- looks and performance)

  • 2. If the Hero Honda Karizma were a person what kind of a person would he be?

  • 3. What do you think Karizma stands for? (Positive / negative)

  • 4. Would you ever buy a HH Karizma (why/why not?)

  • 5. What kind of an image does HH try to communicate about Karizma through its ads?

Any other inputs if you could add to the above info would be more than welcome. In anticipation of a positive reply,

Thanks,
Regards,

Priyanka Mehra
Welingkar Institute of Management, Mumbai

I will be publishing my answers to the above questions after a few days. Meanwhile it will be greatly appreciated if you guys could also chip in with your views/answers to these questions.

Here are my answers for the questions

Q1. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear/see Hero Honda Karizma?
Ans - The first thing that comes to mind is a big black bike, not good looking, oddly shaped, poorly designed, but does the job somehow.

Q2. If the Hero Honda Karizma were a person what kind of a person would he be?
Ans - He would be an executive. 50 years old. Not young but not too old too. Clean shaved. All business type. The guy with attitude types. A person good at getting things done. Not very friendly.

Q3. What do you think Karizma stands for?
Ans - Cheezy name but something like the x-factor

Q4. Would you ever buy a HH Karizma ?
Ans - No, not unless someone gifts me one. Doesn't have that fun factor in it.

Q5. What kind of an image does HH try to communicate about Karizma through its ads?
Ans - It tries to portray an image which is a balance of fun, attitude, power, performance. But it definitely tries to outdo the competition in terms of reliability.

Q1. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear/see Hero Honda Karizma?
Ans - nice tourer-sports bike combo, because of lots of power and comfort, but could have had better styling

Q2. If the Hero Honda Karizma were a person what kind of a person would he be?
Ans - observing karizma owners at my college, i wud say may be a rich dad's son who likes to show off or a person with a very flamboyant nature. usually with his expensive goggles n wrist watch

Q3. What do you think Karizma stands for?
Ans - charisma with a typically japanese, cheezy, over-the-top name treatment

Q4. Would you ever buy a HH Karizma ?
Ans - No way. the p220 and even the p200 shows us all what the bike really should have been.

Q5. What kind of an image does HH try to communicate about Karizma through its ads?
Ans - they try to give a bigger-than-life image. all the mud slinging at the "bad-guy"'s face also tells people that karizma riders have the "look, i'm the hero" nature in them

I am not trying to answer the questions individually, but as what an INDIAN BIKER would probably answer
1. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear/see Hero Honda Karizma?
***India's first new gen superbike, big bike with big bike feel, decently good looking and always on the wishlist

2. If the Hero Honda Karizma were a person what kind of a person would he be?
***Matured and able to take responsibility and doing the work effectively of what is being expected of him

3. What do you think Karizma stands for? (Positive / negative)
***HH relaibility and good perfomance tourer for Indian standard are the positives, while negative points stand out to be 'more performance required' and better ergonomics, say a monoshock, etc.

4. Would you ever buy a HH Karizma (why/why not?)
***(As an Indian Biker) Definitely

5. What kind of an image does HH try to communicate about Karizma through its ads?
***The new ads as well as the old one with Mr. Roshans shows a cool mature customer (read Bike) who can deliver the goods without any fuss

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear/see Hero Honda Karizma? (Functionally speaking- looks and performance)

First thing that comes to my mind when i hear about ZMA is "a bike that changed Indian biking"
when i look at it feels a big sporty bike that can be taken places and can be used to cruise distance and munch miles between the wheels.

If the Hero Honda Karizma were a person what kind of a person would he be?

sum1 who steals away everybody's heart....mind n soul.
through sheer road presence and performance.

What do you think Karizma stands for? (Positive / negative)

Karizma is a symbol for maturing indian Bike lovers.
and simply because of this beautiful machine we have raised expectations from other bike maker.

Would you ever buy a HH Karizma (why/why not?)

why i would buy Karizma
a) for its road Presence
b) ability to munch miles
c) go a long distance
d) gem of an Engine
e) Stability

why i would not buy Karizma
a) hero honda Servicing
b) availability of spares
c) lack of R and D at Hero Honda
d) problems that came with Karizma where never solved
e) cheap Plastic Parts
f) better products are available now
h) expensive spares

What kind of an image does HH try to communicate about Karizma through its ads?

lets not talk about it.
they tried to project too much where as the machine is not that capable.
but the point is we never had machine to perform what karizma can do for real.

to conclude:
Hero Honda could have done better with this machine but they never did it.
there were no upgrades.
quality remained same no improvement in the product.
Minor Sticker job and an engine guard.
Timely upgrade could have made this product much better but there was no evolution.
May be Hero group is too much dependent on Honda and upgrading the product might have made it more expensive.
Neither this product had a competitor till now.
but now it has a competitor.
as per Darwin's theory of Evolution survival for the Fittest. either it has to evolve of gradually phase out.
