6 TVS introduces its 110 C.C Step Thru "Neo" for Indonesia

TVS prepares to conquer Indonesia with its 110 c.c step thru, the "NEO"..!!

5 days ago on 11'th May 2007, I made a post on TVS about to start its Indonesian innings. Today on 16'th May, the Hindu BusinessLine finally reports the Indonesian venture of TVS..

Yes, TVS Motor Company of India is finally going to start its Indonesian venture named "PT TVS Motor Company, Indonesia" with a manufacturing facility at Karawang, an hour's drive from the capital Jakarta. It will be the TVS' hub for the ASEAN region.

The first product of TVS in Indonesia will be a 110 C.C, 4 stroke Step Thru Model named "NEO".

TVS NEO for Indonesia

From the pics, the 110 C.C TVS NEO with its front Disc Brakes and Black Alloys looks sharp and ready to storm into Indonesian bikers hearts.

NEO has been designed to have a few `innovative features' for Indonesia like...

">>Official launch by June 2007

>> Price yet to be decided

>> plans for 100 dealers by March 2008"

  • A "Dual Clutch System" which will give the rider to choose between a manually geared or automatic transmission. [Cool feature I say..!!]

  • A temperature sensor to indicate when to use the choke for cold starts

  • Additional space under the seat for a helmet

The Neo will be officially launched by June 2007. TVS is confident of meeting the target of 1 lakh motorcycles by March 2008. The first target is to achieve a monthly sales of 10,000 by October 2007.

Pricing is to be decided in the next few days. Similar vehicles are priced between Rs 50,000 and Rs 75,000. A competitive price can be expected for the Neo.

Indonesians previously weren't that mileage-conscious, but following the removal of Government subsidy on petroleum products which has caused a 50 per cent hike in prices of petrol and diesel, the common Indonesia is starting to become more and more mileage consious.

"Bollywood Movies and Bollywood Movie stars are Quite popular in Indonesia..

TVS should use its Bollywood Star and the Brand Ambassador Preity Zinta for its Indonesian advertisement campaigns..!!

PT TVS Motors plans to have 100 dealers by March 2008. TVS has invested $45-million in Indonesia so far and has plans to invest another $55 million in the next three years. It also plans to increase the local production from the present 40 per cent to bring down costs. The plant has a present capacity of 3 lakh units a year. The engine will be intially imported from India but TVS intends to add facilities like engine manufacturing there.

The Director-Sales and Marketing, Mr K. Vijaya Kumar states that "Till recently, the common Indonesian knew nothing of India. But now, having heard of India's success in software, they are very respectful of Indians.

The Bajaj Pulsar 180 DTSi has already made an initial impression about Indian Manufacturing in Indonesia. To create an impact in Indonesia, TVS should use its Bollywood Star and the Brand Ambassador of the Scooty Pep, Preity Zinta in its advertisement campaigns.

Preity Zinta, Brand Ambassador for TVS Scooty

For one thing I have come to know after visiting several Indonesian two wheeler blogs, forums and also from my association with Mr. Aziz (an regular visitor to "The Bike Chroniclers of India" from Indonesia) is that Bollywood Movies and Bollywood Movie stars are Quite popular in Indonesia. Considering the NEO is targetted at the female population as well, Miss Zinta could be a perfect choice as a brand ambassador for Indonesia too.

Though TVS has no plans for the NEO in India, but could the NEO just have a potential market in India too..??

According to me the NEO can be a more trendy and safe option than the dimunitive and small wheeled TVS Scooty, Hero Honda Pleasure, Bajaj Kristal, Honda Activa or the Kinetic scooters. What say..??

I personally think, in India the Neo would mimic the failure of the HeroHonda Street.

It would be successful in India if it can give better fuel economy and performance than other step-throughs and scooters at present.

HH Street was a failure because of its poor Engine Performance.
