1 Time Out: My Visit To Kaziranga National Park

Elephant ride in the Kaziranga National Park along with 4 of my friends..!!

"..had there been peace in the North Eastern part of India, the whole region could have easily been transformed into an attractive tourist destination. It really is a paradise unexplored..!!"

The reason why there hasn't been any new posts on the blog lately is because I am on a vacation of 3 weeks from 14'th Jan to Feb 5'th. And right now I am back at my native "Assam".

Last week, 3 of my friends from college came down to visit Assam. One of them (Saptarshi) is from Jamshedpur and the other two (Karthik and Lakshmanan) from Tamil Nadu.. Another friend (Debojit) of my college who is from Guwahati, had already taken them to visit beautiful Shillong, Capital of Meghalaya the neighboring hill state.

I met them on 16'th Jan at the tourist lodge of the world famous KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK. They were all there to see the World Famous and very rare One Horned Indian Rhinoceros.. we spent the 16'th night at the lodge.

On 17'th Jan we got up early in the morning at around 4:30 a.m. Temp outside must have been around 5-6 degree centigrades.. The reason why we were up so early in the morning was to take the elephant ride in the morning before the sunrise.. because once the sun comes out the rhinos goes back into the deep forests and is not easy to sight.

There were around 10 elephants and were along with some other tourists got on to there backs. This was my first elephant ride. It felt as if I was on a ship moving on land.. just after a few minutes we got to see out first rhino.. it was grazing around alone.. the elephants were moving around in a close formation. There was even a forest guard on one elephant along with his gun. This is because sometimes tigers are also seen in these parts.

The fog was very thick and visibility was only about 10-15 meters. The ride lasted for around one hour and we got glimpses of other rhinos, a wild buffalo, a few wild boars and a group of a swamp deers..

I took my friends to my home in Jorhat, 88 kms from KAZIRANGA.. they left the next day.

I can't help but feel sad at the thought that had there been peace in the North Eastern part of India, the whole region could have easily been transformed into an attractive tourist destination. It really is a paradise unexplored..!!
